Decoupling economic growth from increasing human pressure on land and water resources

Economic growth has traditionally depended on energy production and resource extraction with increasing human pressure on nature. The specific linkages between GDP growth and the human consumption of land and water, however, remain understudied. Through an analysis of the food–energy–water nexus, this study examines the hydrological and land-use impacts of economic growth alongside the environmental trade-offs and structural limits of tech-driven carbon and water decoupling strategies. We show that decarbonization and clean energy transitions frequently shift environmental pressures away from climate warming and toward increased land and water exploitation, while also displacing ecological burdens across space and time. To mitigate these impacts, we highlight potential decoupling pathways driven by evolving consumer habits and demand-side moderation strategies.
