Bioprocesses, especially fermentation processes, are complex. These processes have many more variables that
influence the reaction than chemical syntheses do. Therefore, developing a fermentation process is ‘difficile’.
Many process developments fail during the scale-up or implementation phase, also known as the "valley of death."
Claimed reasons for failure often include a lack of resources, particularly financing. Limited access to scale-up
facilities is also cited as a reason.
However, if this were a generic issue, why would some companies succeed while others do not? There must be
something else at play here.
The foundation for success in the scale-up phase is established early in the project. This lecture focuses on the
success factors in developing biobased products. Which scientific, technical, social, and other parameters should
be considered when organizing a project team or start-up, and when developing and implementing a bioprocess?
